Boat Project

For the final project, we had to construct a boat from one 4x8' piece of plywood, a pound of fasteners, 60 yards of duct tape, the equivalent of two 2x4's, and paint.

Kendra came up with the idea to base our boat off of the bat mobile. Her maquette was not very stable and did not float so teammate Michaela, Kendra, and myself came up with creating a speedboat design in combination with the bat mobile.

Once constructed our boat looked like...

The next step was painting...

and our matching oar...

Toy Project

The toy assignment involved us thinking up an original idea for a toy and creating it along with the packaging. My toy is a Closet Monster Body Pillow. For each color, the monster has his own name. Mine is named Humphrey and the mock is named Ralph. The packaging is a simple tag in the shape of a closet. When you open the closet, you read a story of the origins of the Closet Monsters.

The Preliminary Sketching...

Here is Ralph, the mock...

Here is the final project, Humphrey, in actual size....

Foam Subtractive

The project was to carve a sculpture out of foam that incorporated several elements of designs from functional objects--combining them all into one non-functional object.

This is my original sketch of my idea...

I then created a maquette of my design...

After many weeks and a lot of styrofoam, the finished product...

V. Shape, Form, and Texture

Form: The shape, visual appearance, or configuration of an object
Pattern: A design created using repeated elements
Tension: A mental, emotional, or nervous strain. In art, it may refer to the use of "unbalance" to create a sense of instability or precariousness and so engage the viewer.
Textural Animation: The use of textures to give life or new meaning to an otherwise nondescript form.
Characteristic Textures: Textures that add to or at least do not conflict with a form, but appear as if they could be natural.
Contradictory Textures: Textures that stand, whether functionally or visually, in complete contrast to the form they cover.

Alter Ego Mask Project

For this project, we were meant to create a mask which represents our alter egos. The mask should use both high and low relief and still be in the round.

My alter ego was a spider and each color represented some aspect of a different spider. They combined in order to create my personality. Here is the story...
Kayla Harbeitner was one day walking the campus of Ringling College of Art and Design and came upon a familiar person in a villainous mask. She stared at this person and realized this was no one ordinary but her alter-ego! Kayla, very confused, approached this masked alter-ego and they began talking. The alter-ego’s mask was none other than a spider. The classical gold represents the non-aggressive aspect of the St. Andrews Cross Spiders, while the red/pink comes from the deadly Black Widow. The blue is the psychotic, high-strung aspect of the Cobalt Blue Tarantula. The textured purple legs represent the hair on legs of the Wolf spider and the Tarantula. The spider can live anywhere, which makes the alter-ego a person without boundaries or restraints. Learning about each aspect of the mask and what each represents made Kayla a little nervous, so she decided to back away slowly without upsetting her alter-ego. Luckily she escaped to live another day, but she will always be worried about seeing her alter-ego in the mirror.
